Colposcopy

A special binocular microscope called a Colposcope can be used to examine the cervix (neck of the womb) after abnormal cells have been identified on the cervical smear. Acetic acid and iodine can be used to identify abnormal areas and either a localised biopsy, knife cone biopsy or laser treatment performed. Other procedures include LLETZ (Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone) or LEEP (Loop Electro-Excision Procedure).
