Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the uterus (womb). Usually the cervix (neck of the womb) is also removed and sometimes the fallopian tubes and ovaries.

This is a major operation usually recommended to patients after simpler treatments have failed to control their symptoms.  In some cases there may be no suitable alternatives and a hysterectomy may be recommended immediately, but this is unusual.

A hysterectomy can be performed through a cut on the tummy (abdominal hysterectomy), through the vagina (vaginal hysterectomy) or using a 'keyhole' technique (laparoscopic hysterectomy).

You should discuss with your GP or with Mr Ford the relative advantages and disadvantages of retaining your ovaries.
